Comprehensive Plan Amendment Process

The city will be accepting privately initiated amendment applications for consideration with the city directed 2015 Comprehensive Plan update for 60 days, from October 21, 2014 until December 19, 2014.  Anyone can formally submit a privately initiated comprehensive plan amendment, including property owners, residents, and business owners. To be eligible for consideration, applications and the associated fee for a privately initiated amendment must be submitted to the City by 5 p.m. on Friday December 19, 2014.

If you are interested in more information, a Comprehensive Plan amendment instruction guide, timeline and application can be found on the city’s website or a hard copy can be picked up at city hall.

Traffic Advisory for SE 240th Street in Kent

Covington Way to Close Friday June 20 for Railroad Repairs

Burlington Northern Sante Fe will be conducting emergency repairs to the railroad crossing on Covington Way SE between SE Wax Road and 164th Pl. SE on Friday, June 20. The repairs are necessary for the safety of the public and of trains. To conduct the emergency repairs, Covington Way SE will be closed at the railroad tracks from 5 a.m.-7 p.m. This closure is expected to have a major impact on traffic in Covington, which also serves as a major thoroughfare to other Southeast King County cities like Maple Valley and Black Diamond.

Southbound traffic will be detoured east along SE Wax Rd. Northbound traffic will be detoured west along 164th Pl. SE. Flaggers will be on site to assist motorist during the closure, but drivers should expect lengthy back-ups and delays. Drivers who commute this route are strongly encouraged to take alternate routes or avoid the area, if possible.

Human Services Commission - Volunteer Opportunity

The City of Covington is accepting applications for five volunteer openings on the Human Services Commission.  The purpose of the Human Services Commission is to assess needs of youth and families within the community, recommend human service grant funding, and develop policies and programs to assist with those goals. The Human Services Commission meets the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. 

Positions are open to adults living or working inside the Covington city limits or living within a three-mile radius of city limits.  Two of the five openings are for youth applicants between the ages of 14 and 18 years at the start of their terms residing in or within a three-mile radius of the City of Covington.

Each year, 40 community-minded and passionate individuals serve on the City’s commissions. Our commissioners provide valuable leadership to the City through their active participation on the Covington Economic Development Council and the Arts, Human Services, Parks and Recreation, and Planning Commissions. 

Now is your chance to join this group of concerned and dedicated citizens who play a significant role in city government. Of the City’s five commissions, there will be two openings on the Parks and Recreation Commission for citizens who want to be advocates, proactive participants, and leaders in the growth of Covington’s Parks and Recreation system. 

Commission members participate in advisory, advocacy, and planning activities related to parks and recreation. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. and members are also expected to occasionally attend other events such as council meetings and participate in identified volunteer and community events.

Applicants can include youth as well as adults who live in or within three miles of the city. City Council expects to conduct interviews on Tuesday, January 14, prior to the regular city council meeting.

Covington Seeking Pro/Con Committees for Proposed Ballot Measure

Individuals who are interested in writing a pro or con statement to be included in the November voters’ pamphlet for a proposed sales tax increase to fund the newly created Covington Transportation Benefit District (TBD) should contact the city by July 2 to express their interest.

 

A two tenths of a percent sales tax increase, which equates to only 1¢ on every $5 of taxable purchases, is being proposed on the November ballot to pay for the city’s unmet transportation needs. The TBD Board has the responsibility to appoint committee members to prepare voters’ pamphlet statements in favor of and in opposition to the ballot measure.

City to Draft Plan to Prepare for Impacts of Natural Hazards

Responding to federal mandates in the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (Public Law 106-390), the City of Covington applied for and was awarded a planning grant funded by FEMA to develop a Hazard Mitigation Plan.


With assistance from a technical consultant, the City has now embarked on a planning process to prepare for impacts of natural disasters, which will take approximately 6-9 months to complete.

After two weeks of gathering name suggestions from the public, the Covington Parks and Recreation Commission selected Covington Community Park as the recommended name for the City’s new park.

At their meeting on March 20, the Commission reviewed 25 proposed names for the new park that is located at the Southwest corner of the intersection of 180th Ave SE and SE 240th St. Ultimately, Covington Community Park was chosen as the recommended name. The name refers to the park’s intent as a gathering place for all community residents as well as a place for active recreation. Coincidently, this has also been the working name for the park since it has been under construction.

City's Community Park Needs New Name

The City’s new park located at the Southwest corner of 180th Ave SE and SE 240th St, across from Tahoma High School, is ready to receive its official name.

The park, which has been under construction since July 2012, is nearly complete and it features a full-size grass soccer field, paved parking lot and portable-style toilets.   Over a mile of paved and soft surface trails, most of which are wheelchair accessible, wind through the pasture and 15-acre forested area.  Little Soos Creek runs through the southwest corner of the property.

The City of Covington is accepting applications for the Human Services Commission.  The purpose of the Human Services Commission is to assess needs of youth and families within the community, recommend human service grant funding, and develop policies and programs to assist with those goals. The Human Services Commission meets the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. 
The City of Covington is also seeking art enthusiasts to apply for open arts commissionpositions. Arts commissioners serve the city as advisors to the city council in matters of art and coordinate various art programs and events in the city, including the monthly artwork display in city hall’s art gallery.

Arts commissioners also organize the annual Student Art Walk, which includes contacting businesses, inventorying submitted artwork, and creating the exhibit in collaboration with Covington business owners. Arts commissioners also organize the annual Covington Days Art Show in addition to other projects through the year.  The Arts Commission meets the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

New Community Tree Set to be Planted Dec. 7

The City of Covington will get a new community tree - a 25 foot tall Mountain Hemlock - to replace the tree fatally damaged last weekend by a vandal. The site will be prepared and the new tree will be planted on Friday, Dec. 7 around 1:30 p.m. The public can expect to see crews working at the Don Henning Roundabout throughout the morning and early afternoon.

Donations to Replace Community Tree Being Accepted

As news of vandalism to the Covington community tree has spread, citizens and businesses from inside and outside of the city are stepping forward with offers to help. Since Saturday, the city has received numerous emails and phone calls from people wanting to donate trees, offer money for a reward to catch the vandal, and donate funds to cover costs of replacing the tree and lights.


The outpouring of support comes after city crews had to cut down the 35 foot tall tree because the damage was so severe.

City to Proceed with Tree Lighting Event In Spite of Vandalism

The City of Covington is proceeding with plans to hold its annual Community Tree Lighting Event this evening in spite of extensive damage the tree sustained when an unidentified vandal attempted to saw it down this morning. The 35 foot tall Spruce is locate
in the Don Henning Roundabout on 168th Place between Fred Meyer and Pier I Imports.


Covington police responded to a call at around 5:30 a.m. that someone was sawing down the community tree. When police arrived on scene the suspect was gone, leaving behind a metal wedge and sign. “We’re going to try to do everything we can to recover evidence from the items,” stated Covington police officer Kyle Riches.


“The cut that was made was done with a hand saw through 80 percent of the tree trunk,” stated City of Covington Arborist and Maintenance Crew Member Bill Fealy. “That damage is a death sentence for the tree.”

Covington Tree Lighting Dec. 1 - Road Closure Info

The City of Covington will light the community tree on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. To provide a safe gathering location, the city's Public Works Department will be initiating the closure of 168th Place Southeast between the two roundabouts located between Pier 1 Imports and the new Valley Medical Building beginning around 2:30 p.m.

Festivities include kid's craft activities, a solo singing performance, community caroling, a performance by the Emerald City Ringers bell choir and, of course, Santa riding in on a firetruck! The stage and booths will be located on 168th Place Southeast directly next to Pier 1 Imports.

Covington to Develop Strategic Plan for Trees

The City of Covington is preparing a strategic plan for trees. Yes, trees. Trees are very important assets to a community and as Covington’s population has grown 40 percent over the past 15 years, so has the number of trees being planted on new arterials, along neighborhood streets and in parks. By obtaining a $10,000 grant from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, the City is developing what’s known as an Urban Forestry Strategic Plan.

Citizen Police Volunteers Needed

Covington police have developed a new Citizen Police Volunteer Program and are reaching out to members of the community that are interested in helping deter criminal activity.


Citizens interested in participating in the volunteer program are urged to complete the volunteer application packet and be interviewed by a panel consisting of the police chief, a police department member and a human resources representative. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and applicants must also clear a criminal history background check.

A large number of Covington residents belong to one of the dozens of homeowners’ associations (HOAs) that govern the various neighborhoods throughout the city.  Covington’s HOA members will have the opportunity to meet with city staff at Covington City Hall in a public forum on Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m.


The city’s Community Development Department will provide an informational presentation about code enforcement including how complaints can be made, how they are processed, and how they get resolved. Staff, including the city’s Code Enforcement Officer and Police Chief, will also be on hand to join in discussion and answer questions.  


The city holds HOA forums when homeowners’ associations express an interest in learning more about specific topics and it helps keep the city and HOAs connected. In recent news, and due to the current economic climate, code enforcement tends to be a common theme that HOAs are interested in learning more about.

HousingSearchNW.org is a new website that helps landlords anywhere in King County fill vacancies in their rental homes by letting providers advertise their properties free of charge, while renters can search online for free to find rentals that fit their needs and budget.

The new web-based service is supported by a toll-free call center that can provide assistance in English and Spanish as well as other languages spoken by King County residents. Homeowners with rental housing can register their properties now online or by calling 1-877-428-8844.
