The City of Covington’s Parks and Recreation Department is now open for registration for Winter classes. Programs will run from January through March. Astronomy and Nature
Covington Community Park Star Party
The community is invited to sail the Milky Way with local astronomers who will provide star gazing expertise along with access to telescopes, binoculars and star charts. Explore the Moon, the planets, constellations, stars, clusters and galaxies that each season’s night scape presents. Dress warmly and bring a small flashlight (red filters are provided). Children with parental supervision are welcome and astronomers will bring the stars alive for small ones. Inclement, cloudy weather (more than a few isolated clouds) will likely cause cancellation. Star parties are free and open to the public at Covington Community Park. Cancellation notification will be posted at the Seattle Astronomical Society website at www.seattleastro.org. Otherwise look to the sky before you come.

Come learn about and see the four owl species that live in Soos Creek Park. After a 45- minute talk indoors, we will head out into the park to locate and view owls in their natural habitat through night scopes. Dress warm with layers!
Safe at Home
This 2-hour course is designed for children ages 8-12 to learn about potential dangers when home alone. Learn how to be responsible and safe in any situation. We cover family communication, first aid, internet, gun, phone, fire, and door safety. Located at the Covington City Hall Community Room.
Boys and girls, come for a day of fun while earning your Super Sitters certificate. This class will cover leadership and the business of babysitting, basic care for children, understanding children of different age groups, safety, and first aid. Bring a sack lunch and snack to class. Located at the Covington City Hall Community Room.
Musikgarten – Family Music for Toddlers
Join us for a fun, action-filled class for toddlers and their parents. Together we’ll sing, chant, move, dance, listen, and play simple instruments, all activities that bridge the natural connection between music and movement. Additionally, you’ll receive a wonderful CD, a parent activity book, and an instrument or scarf to use at home for more time together. Session two is a continuation of session one with new curriculum.
Musikgarten – Preschool Music: Cycle of Seasons
Celebrate your child’s love of nature and growing independence through activities involving the four seasons. Developed to build attention and selfexpression, activities include singing, chanting, moving, focused listening, musical games, exploring musical instruments, creative movement and storytelling. The Cycle of Seasons nurtures your growing child’s ability to use language and participate in dramatic play within a musical context. Fun family packets including music CDs are included for use at home to increase family involvement in the learning process. Session 2 is a continuation of session 1 with new curriculum.
Daddy Daughter Spring Fling
Fathers and daughter(s) come and enjoy our fourth annual event! Join us for a fun-filled evening of dancing, food, and prizes. All ages are welcome. Grandpas, uncles, and big brothers are welcome too! This event is located at Kentwood High School in the Multipurpose Room. Registration opens March 1, 2018.
Hart’s gymnastic program is family-friendly while offering the highest quality coaches and staff. Classes are held at Hart’s Gymnastic Center, 26415 79th Ave S. Kent, WA 98032.
Movement – Ages 16 mos.-3 years
This Parent & Tot class is the ideal place to have organized, safe fun exploring movement with your child in a gymnastic environment.
Preschool – Ages 3-5
Designed for preschoolers ready to participate without the help of a parent/guardian, this class will continue to explore movement as they go through tunnels, climb over blocks, cross balance beams, and explore the gym.
Girls – Ages 6-12
Students learn the basics of fun and safe gymnastics while emphasizing basic gymnastic skills, safety, strength, and flexibility. They will expand their skills with use of the trampoline and working on all Olympic
Creative Movement Ages 2-4
This is a fun introductory class for 2-4 year olds with a focus on the fundamentals of creative movement, concepts of music, and rhythm.
Pre-Ballet Ages 4-6 years
This is an introductory class for 4-6 year olds that is full of fun, music and learning. Class will focus on the fundamentals of creative movement and beginner ballet techniques and terminology. Students should bring a water bottle and a smile! Ballet shoes are recommended.
Jazz and Dance Team Ages 7-12
This is a beginning jazz class for 7-12 year olds. Dancers will learn to properly execute classical and contemporary jazz steps and techniques. They will also train to understand rhythm and musicality. Jazz shoes or dance paws are recommended. Dancers will also learn ballet, jazz, pom, and hip-hop technique, as well as more advance skills, such as leaps, jumps and turns. Bring lots of water!
Rizzkids – Dance Fitness Frenzy
Join instructor Daisy Larsen for 40 minutes of wiggling to the best music in American pop culture from jazz to country to disco and hip-hop. Kidz Love Soccer
This program provides kids with the positive framework where all players are nurtured, built up and developed as young athletes. A typical class includes activities like warm up, skill introduction, games and scrimmages conducted in a non-competitive, recreational format.
Mommy/Daddy & Me Soccer
Introduce your toddler to the world’s most popular sport. As you and your child participate in fun age-appropriate activities, your child will be developing their large motor skills and socializing skills. The fun happens on the field, and in Mommy/Daddy & Me Soccer parents are a part of the action! Each child receives a Kidz Love Soccer jersey!
Tot & Pre-Soccer
Enjoy running and kicking the ball just like the big kids! Kids will learn basic techniques while building self-esteem and learning to follow instructions in a nurturing teaching environment. Each kid receives a Kidz Love Soccer jersey! Shin guards are required after the first meeting.
Soccer 1: Techniques and Teamwork
Players will learn dribbling, passing, defense, and shooting goals! Fun skill games are played at every session and every participant will have a ball at his or her feet. Small-sided soccer matches will be introduced gradually. This class is perfect for first time players but still fun and engaging for kids with some experience. Each participant receives a Kidz Love Soccer jersey! Shin guards are required after the first meeting.
Soccer 2: Skillz & Scrimmages
Have a great time while developing core soccer skills like dribbling, passing and shooting in a team play format. Each class will include individual skill building and scrimmages to develop teamwork and positional play. All levels are welcome to come enjoy the worlds’ most popular game! All participants will receive a soccer jersey! Shin guards are required after the first meeting.
Eastside Basketball Institute Skills Beginning Class
This class is targeted for players that are learning the game of basketball. Players will work on the fundamentals of the game to increase skills in passing, ball handling, shooting, footwork and defense. Your game and team skill will improve under the shot doctor’s training. Eastside Basketball Institute Skills 1 on 1
Go one on one with Coach Felicia. Her focus is on live fundamentals and being able to succeed in a game settings with confidence. Sessions include ball handling, vertical and strength training, shooting, one on one moves, PG decision making, moving without the ball, post play, finishing tech, and finishing with a fun game. Kids Beginner Karate
This class is an ongoing introduction to self-defense for children. Students will receive step-by-step instruction to the basics of karate. Warm-up exercises will help increase fitness and flexibility. Practices will teach fundamental karate skills that help develop confidence and positive personal growth. There is an additional one-time uniform fee of $40.
This class will focus on core strength, body control, team work, team challenges, and basic tumbling skills. It is a great place to start your ninja warrior career through play and fun!
Circus Arts Classes
Ever wanted to walk a tightwire or learn how to juggle? Well, Covington Parks and Recreation and Synapse Circus Center have teamed up to provide you with the chance! In Circus Arts you can learn the basics of all sorts of amazing circus skills: balance, acrobatics, and object manipulation. Handstands, low tightwire and ball walking are used as different types of balance. Acrobatics and human pyramids train students to jump and use momentum. Juggling, object balancing and Chinese Yo-Yo are used in object manipulation and so much more! No previous experience is needed. Students will get to demonstrate their new skills at the End of Session Show the last day. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable, stretchy clothing that allows for full range of movement and is not too baggy. Please no zippers or buckles on clothing as it damages equipment. Students may go barefoot or wear socks or gym/ballet shoes.
Children's Origami Story Time
This class is targeted for young children and their parents. Come listen to several age-appropriate stories, sing a couple songs, and best of all, make your own fun origami project each evening. Due to instructor: $15 per
Cheetah After School Art
Join us each early release Wednesday for creative art time. We will create a new project each week. Kids should bring their imagination and love of art! Register early as this free class fills quickly.
After School Origami
In this one-hour class, you will make at least two fun origami projects on early release Wednesday. Origami is a great way of visualizing shapes, which helps with math skills, following directions, interpersonal skills, and fine motor skills.
Paper Crafted Greeting Cards
In this 3-week class, you will learn a variety of unique greeting card techniques ranging from die cuts, origami, quilling, stamping and iris folding. You will make several greeting cards using a mixture of techniques each week. Due to instructor: $15 per person to cover all materials and supplies for the project.
Kids in the Kitchen- Valentine's Chocolate
Come and learn how to make your own Butterfinger candy bars just in time for Valentine’s Day! Nothing says I love you like homemade chocolates! Each student will make their own candy bar filling, and learn how to hand dip them in melted chocolate. Every student will also receive a recipe, and get to take home the candies they make in class.
Kids in the Kitchen- No Bake Cheesecake
Come and learn how to make your own easy No Bake Cheesecake! Each student will learn how to make their own cheesecake! Each student will learn how to make their own cheesecake filling, a cookie crust for the base of their filling, and a fruit topping to garnish their cheesecake. What is made in class will go home with the students, as well as recipes, and the skill to impress and make their own cheesecake at home!
Stroller Strides & Barre
Stroller Strides and Stroller Barre is the perfect workout option for any mom who is pregnant or has stroller-aged children and are looking to get in great shape. Stroller Strides is catered to making it fun for kiddos and showing them that exercise is a part of our daily life and is taught by certified instructors specializing in pre and post natal exercise. Stroller Barre is a unique blend of ballet, pilates, barre, yoga and stroller-based exercises designed to help moms build strength and muscle tone, and improve posture. Join us for Zumba Gold! This format is designed for those wanting an exercise program that is fun, safe and functional. The class is designed for people over 55, but is also great for any beginner, or exercise fanatic who has been injured or is recovering from an injury. Badges and Barbells Weightlifting Club
The King County Sheriff’s Office Foundation (Greater King County PAL) has partnered with the Kent School District at Cedar Heights Middle School to give First Responders and students opportunities to improve their health while also building positive relationships through the “Badges and Barbells Weightlifting Club”.
“Badges and Barbells” is a strength and conditioning program for students and First Responders (law enforcement/corrections/fire personnel) of all skill levels, including adaptive athletes. USAW Certified Coaches help participants identify their goals and adapt the program to meet their individual needs in a positive and supportive environment. There is no need to “get in shape” to get started, because the program will meet you where you are! The program includes basic linear strength progressions using compound movements followed by short conditioning workouts. *Must have student ID card.
