Volunteer as a Commissioner

Each year, 40 community-minded and passionate individuals serve onIMG_6271 the City’s commissions. Our commissioners provide valuable leadership to the City through their active participation on the Covington Economic Development Council and the Arts, Human Services, Parks and Recreation, and Planning Commissions. Volunteer on the Youth Council
The purpose of the Covington Youth Council is to involve youth in local government, increase volunteerism among youth in civic affairs, increase communication with youth in the community, involve youth in planning youth activities in Covington, and to serve as an advisory body to the City Council on matters dealing with youth in the community. Volunteer at Special Events
Special events can often use program support from volunteers.  Annual events include:

  • Holiday Tree Lighting

Volunteer as a Coach
Athletic programs rely on volunteer coaches. Typically, this requires attending covingtonBronsona mandatory coach’s meeting and 1-4 hours per week commitment during the sport’s season to coach practices and games. Coaches are needed for basketball, soccer, baseball/Tball, junior golf, flag football and volleyball. The city supplies all equipment. Coaches choose their own practice day and receive a shirt and plaque. Head coaches receive a 50% discount on their child’s registration. Volunteer at Covington Aquatic Center
Volunteer as a swim instructor aide or junior lifeguard at the Covington Aquatic Center. This opportunity is for ages 11-15 and requires completion of the Aquatic Volunteer Academy. Individuals that log 150 volunteer hours at the aquatic center may then enroll in a lifeguard training course at no cost (a value of $240). Recreation and Cultural Arts Internships
This internship is designed to provide quality training and practical experiences in a wide variety of recreation program areas and to introduce the intern to the operational procedures of a Parks and Recreation Department. Assist in organizing, coordinating, implementing and supervising a variety of departmental programs, events and office work. These may include: sport league events, concerts in the park, Covington Days, city art projects, grant applications, and other city-related events.  This internship will also gain experience working with youth and sport leagues and other recreation programs and activities. HOA and Neighborhood Clean-Up Events
HOA’s and neighborhoods are encouraged to come together and hold clean-up events in their neighborhoods. This can be a great spring-time or post-storm event to manage debris, overgrowth, litter, etc.  The impact is immediate and results is a more beautiful community. While this volunteer work is not managed by the City of Covington, the city may be able to provide support, such as the hauling of debris/garbage.
