Hazard Mitigation

Hazard Mitigation Planning:  2018 – Present

The City of Covington is in the process of updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan.  Once the template is complete we will forward it to King County for review and then annex to King County’s Hazard Mitigation Plan.

Hazard mitigation reduces disaster damages and is defined as sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property from hazards.  Local governments have the responsibility to protect the health, safety and welfare of their citizens.  Proactive mitigation policies and actions help reduce risk and create safer, more disaster-resilient communities.  Mitigation is an investment in our community’s future safety and sustainability.  Mitigation is important to:Risk

    • Protect public safety and prevent loss of life and injury.
    • Reduce harm to existing and future development.
    • Prevent damage to a community’s unique economic, cultural, and environmental assets.

Updated information will be posted throughout the planning process.

 Hazard Mitigation Planning:  2013 - 2019
The City of Covington is developing its first Hazard Mitigation Plan.  We have selected Tetra Tech, Inc. as our consultant on the project.

The purpose of mitigation planning is to identify policies and actions that can be implemented over the long term to reduce risk and future losses.  Mitigation Plans form the foundation for a community's long-term strategy to reduce disaster losses and break the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage.  The planning process is as important as the plan itself.  It creates a framework for risk-based decision making to reduce damages to lives, property, and the economy from future disasters.

Benefits of Mitigation Planning:

  • Identifying cost effective actions for risk reduction that are agreed upon by stakeholders and the public
  • Focusing resources on the greatest risks and vulnerabilities
  • Building partnerships by involving people, organizations, and businesses
  • Increasing education and awareness of hazards and risk
  • Communicating priorities to state and federal officials
  • Aligning risk reduction with other community objectives

Updated information will be posted throughout the planning process.
